Department of Cardiology, Pulmonology and Intensive Care Medicine

The Department of Cardiology, Pulmonology and Intensive Care Medicine treats patients with acute and chronic diseases affecting the heart, circulation, and lungs. The Department has an interdisciplinary intensive care unit for the treatment of patients under critical conditions. The Head of the Department is Dr. Oliver Volk, Specialist in internal medicine and Cardiology. Diseases, such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, heart defect, myocardial infarction, heart arrhythmia, vascular diseases, hypertension and inflammation of the pericardium are treated in this department. The department has over 40 beds, including telemetry for continuous cardiac rhythm monitoring. The noninvasive imaging methods are used such as echocardiography, Doppler/duplex ultrasound of the veins and arteries, as well as modern tomography techniques are also available. The department has its own Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory for the diagnosis and treatments. The chronic lung diseases (such as pneumonia, asthma, COPD, sarcoidosis), are also treated in this department as well as the diagnosis and treatment of lung tumors of any type (e.g. bronchogenic carcinoma and pleural mesothelioma), with the close collaboration with the Department of Oncology. The department has various diagnostic and therapeutic options, including pulmonary function tests by means of total body plethysmography, diffusion measurement, blood gas test, and allergy testing.

The priority always is given to the best treatment and comprehensive patient care.
