Department of Neurosurgery

Department of Neurosurgery at Ludwig-Maximilian University Hospital provides care for patients with central and peripheral nervous system conditions requiring surgical intervention. The department belongs to the Gliome Network of Excellence of the German Cancer Society.
The department is recognized for its impressive research activities as it’s currently doing researches on neural stem cells, tumors affecting the nervous system and the pathway of disease development to identify the best methods of management and prevention.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Jörg-Christian Tonn, the department treats more than 2,000 inpatients every year. The department has 84 beds, 10 of those beds are specialized for intensive care and 5 for intermediate care units, where specialized and highly experienced doctors and nursing staff work in harmony to provide the patients with the best care.

  • 1983 - 1990 Postgraduate studies for the qualification of a Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery, Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Giessen (under the supervision of Prof. Hans Werner Pia, Norfried Klug and Klaus Roosen).
  • 1990 Medical Specialist in Neurosurgery.
  • Since 1990, Senior Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Giessen.
  • 1992 Doctoral dissertation.
  • 1991 Transfer to the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Wuerzburg (together with Prof. K. Roosen).
  • 1996 Appointment to the position of a Senior Physician.
  • 1997 Invitation to the post of C3 Professor in Neurosurgery, Neuro-Oncology (narrow specialization), Julius Maximilian University of Wuerzburg.
  • 2000 Invitation to the position of C4 Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Hamburg. In the same year, an invitation to the post of C4 Professor in Neurosurgery at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
  • Since 2001, Head of the Department of Adult and Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
