Department of Ophthalmology at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch provides care for patients with acute and chronic diseases of the eye and orbit. The department follows the guidelines and standards of the German and European Societies of Ophthalmology. The department offers its inpatient and outpatient service for the full range of eye diseases, congenital, inflammatory, degenerative, neoplastic, and traumatic and also provides comprehensive treatment for strabismus for young patients. The field of laser surgeries is one where the department is experienced and recognized as it has cutting-edge laser systems that improve the outcome of operations. The main clinical focuses are the treatment of cataracts and astigmatism using femtosecond laser which is a perfect alternative to scalpel surgeries for cataracts. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Med. Michael Foerster, the staff treats over 1,700 inpatients and performs over 700 surgical interventions for cataract patients every year. The department has an exceptional team of surgeons, that works in close cooperation with the Department of Otolaryngology and Plastic Surgery, for the surgical treatment of amblyopia, retinoblastoma, macular degeneration, retinal pathologies, and traumatic diseases.

- Since 1990 Chief Physician of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin (during this time he developed proton therapy for the treatment of eye tumors, which is a special form of targeted radiation therapy).
