Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich provides surgical care for children and adolescents with congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases. The department is considered to be one of the leading medical facilities of pediatric cardiac surgery as it has an impressive history of achievements for the last 45 years. The department is in close cooperation with the Departments of Pediatric Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. The department performs over 600 surgical interventions every year. The department is fully equipped with the cutting-edge technology and surgical standards and it is one of the few centers in Germany to operate on the basis of its own chair at the university.
Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Med. Jürgen Hörer, the department takes pride in its use of minimally invasive surgical techniques such as in the surgery of correction of atrial septal defect and venous sinus defect. The department works closely with the Mother and Child Center at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Red Cross Hospital in Munich. The department is certified as a supra-regional Center for Congenital Heart Defect for Adults as well by the German Society of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Research, the German Society of Pediatric Cardiology and the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
The Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of:
• Coronary artery anomalies
• Aortic insufficiency
• Aortic stenosis
• Aortic coarctation
• Ventricular septal defect
• Ebstein anomaly
• Interrupted aortic arch
• Atrial septal defect
- Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Hörer is the Head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Congenital Heart Defect Surgery at the German Heart Center Munich.
- From 2011 till 2015, Jürgen Hörer was a Deputy Head of this department, as well as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Technical University of Munich.
- In addition, Professor worked as the Head of the Department of Congenital Heart Diseases at the Marie Lannelongue Hospital, Le Plessis-Robinson, France.
Research Activities
- The evaluation of indicators for predicting mortality and morbidity after surgical treatment of congenital heart pathologies in adults
- The assessment of heart functionality and the quality of life of patients after the classic Fontan procedure
- The evaluation of treatment options for the patients with corrected transposition of the great arteries.
