Frankfurt University Hospital

Head of the Department
Prof. Dr. Claus Rödel
Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology
The department of Radiotherapy and Oncology offers the entire spectrum of modern radiotherapy. This includes special radiation techniques such as intensity-modulated, image-guided and breath-triggered radiotherapy, stereotactic high-precision radiation and interstitial brachytherapy. The treatment team includes specialists in all areas of radiation oncology with a focus on gastrointestinal, uro-oncological, neuro-oncological, gynecological and head and neck tumors. Accompanying therapies (chemotherapy, molecular-targeted drugs), as well as the nutrition, pain and supportive therapy, are administered by specially trained staff. Great attention is paid to the latest safety standards in the treatment of patients. In addition to high-precision radiotherapy and interstitial brachytherapy, the clinical research focuses on the combination of irradiation with molecularly targeted substances as well as on organ-preserving and functional multimodal therapy concepts. An own radiation biological laboratory develops the basics of the molecular radiation effect and the integration of radiosensitizing substances into radio-oncological treatment concepts. The clinic thus makes a significant contribution to patient-oriented, interdisciplinary care and research within the framework of the University Cancer Center (UCT), which is funded by the German Cancer Aid. The Head of the department is Prof. Dr. Claus Rödel
The range of medical services of the department includes:
- Organ and function preserving radiochemotherapy for superficial or intramuscular sarcoma (as an alternative to primary cystectomy)
- Preoperative radiochemotherapy for cancer of the esophagus or cardia, pancreas and rectum
- Definitive radiochemotherapy for anal canal cancer and for primary inoperable pancreatic cancer
- Postoperative and definitive radiochemotherapy for brain tumors
- Postoperative and definitive radiochemotherapy of tumors of ear, throat, and nose, cancer of bronchus and soft tissues
- Breast preserving radiotherapy for breast cancer in women (with intraoperative radiotherapy)
- Definitive or consolidation therapy for lymphomas
- Total body irradiation before the bone marrow transplant in children and adults
- Surgical (interstitial) radiation therapy (brachytherapy) for prostate, cervical and cervical body cancer
- CyberKnife (highly-precise radiosurgery)
