Department of Pediatrics Oncology and Hematology

The Department of Pediatric oncology and hematology at Charite university hospital headed by Prof. Dr. med. Angelika Eggert focuses on treatment of children and adolescents with malignant diseases of the hematopoietic system, benign and malignant tumors, non-malignant, congenital or acquired disorders of blood formation and blood clotting (sickle cell anemia, thalassemias, hemophilia).

The cancer treatment at the Department of Pediatrics with a focus on oncology and hematology is based on scientifically proven therapy - and usually takes between three to 12 months. About 120 children and adolescents are treated at the Department of Pediatrics every year.

The stem cell transplant is another focus of the Department of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology. The pediatric oncology department of the Charite University Hospital Berlin has paid particular attention to the treatment of

  • acute lymphoblastic leukemia (relapsing leukemia),
  • acute myeloid leukemia,
  • brain tumors,
  • neuroblastomas,
  • fanconi anemia,
  • sickle cell disease,
  • coagulation disorders,
  • neurometabolic disorders (eg adrenoleukodystrophy),
  • immunodeficiency diseases.

The research department of the Department of Oncology and Hematology is also involved in various scientific projects of translational and clinical research into leukemias, neuroblastomas, and other childhood embryonic tumors.

Pediatric Oncology is guided by the high standard of care and protocols of the Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH) and other international pediatric oncology societies in treating children and adolescents with malignant diseases. The therapy findings are evidence-based.
