Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology of the Charite university hospital headed by Univ. Dr. med. Antonia Joussen, FEBO is one of the largest Ophthalmological university institutions in Germany. The Department is located at Campus Benjamin Franklin ( CBF ) in Berlin Steglitz and on the Campus Virchow-Klinikum ( CVK ) in Wedding. It is part of the interdisciplinary concept of the Charite and part of the Charite Center CC16 (Center for Audiology, Otolaryngology, and Ophthalmology).

The treatment spectrum ranges from diseases of the eyelids, cornea, and conjunctiva to diseases of the retina and the optic nerve for squint and pediatric ophthalmology. The Department is also focused on patients with rare diseases, complex clinical pictures or the most severe outcomes, including hereditary diseases, eye-threatening infections and tumors of the eye and the eye socket. For this purpose, the most modern diagnostic methods and both conservative and special surgical treatment options are available.

The main focus of the clinic is on the treatment of:

  • Green Star - glaucoma
  • Cancer of the eye or related structures such as lids or eye muscles
  • Cataract in cataract
  • Other cataracts
  • retinal detachment or retinal tear of the eye
  • Other disease or alteration of the retina of the eye
  • Other disease or alteration of the cornea of the eye
