Department of Neurology with Experimental Neurology

The Department of Neurology at the Charite university hospital has been a major center of neurology and neurological research since the early 19th century. The department headed by Prof. Dr. med. Matthias Endres has a strong focus on neuroimaging and cerebrovascular disorders. In addition, thirteen research groups cover the entire field of neuroscience from molecular genetics to behavioral neuroscience.

The Department of Neurology with Experimental Neurology at the Charite is represented at Berlin-Mitte, Berlin-Steglitz, and Berlin-Wedding. The department consists of 160 neurologists and neuroscientists which are dedicated to the understanding and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. Annually in the Inpatient Department over 8,000 neurological cases are treated. The Outpatient Department of Neurology in Berlin cares for more than 20,000 patients each year.

The Department of Neurology has a specialized intensive care unit, which is created for interdisciplinary cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Anesthesiology with a focus on surgical intensive care.

The team of neurology offers the complete diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the peripheral and central nervous system - among other things to the neurological emphases:

  • stroke and neurovascular diseases,
  • neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis,
  • movement disorders such as Parkinson's and tremor,
  • neuropathies and muscle diseases,
  • epilepsy and seizure disorders,
  • headache and facial pain.

In addition, the Department of Neurology is very active in the field of researching the nervous system. The Berlin neurologists work in interdisciplinary and international working groups on a variety of neurological issues.

The Department of Experimental Neurology conducts basic disease-related research - in close cooperation with the Center for Stroke Research Berlin.

Researchers in neurology also investigate neurological diseases in collaborative projects, such as the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence. For example, the Charite's Department of Neurology specializes in the treatment of rare neurological diseases,

such as

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
  • Dystonia
  • Myasthenia gravis and
  • Encephalitis
