Department of Nephrology and Intensive Care

The Department of Internal Medicine at the university hospital of Charite specializing in nephrology and internal intensive care at the Campus Virchow-Klinikum ( CVK ) and Campus Charite Mitte ( CCM ) treats patients with all forms and stages of kidney disease as well as patients from all areas of internal medicine who are in intensive care.

Kidney disease and hypertension are common among the population. Implementation of the latest diagnostic methods allows detecting the causes of renal and hypertensive diseases including rare causes at early stages, which makes treatment more effective. If renal function is no longer adequate, renal replacement therapy is performed. A special focus of the Department is the kidney transplantation with one of the largest transplant programs in Germany.

Intensive care provides medical and nursing care to patients according to the severity of their illnesses.

The department of Internal Medicine (nephrology and internal intensive care) at Charite university hospital specializes in:

  • carrying out organ replacement procedures, including renal replacement therapy;
  • artificial respiration and extracorporeal gas exchange (ECMO) in acute respiratory distress syndrome ( ARDS );
  • acute care after cardiac arrest (Circulatory Arrest Center)
