The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery / Cardiac Surgery at Charite university hospital serves as a university center of maximum care and treats all diseases of the heart and of the vessels close to the heart, including the coronary arteries.

As a part of the University Heart Center Berlin, the hospital team works very closely with the Charite Cardiology Clinics and the German Heart Center Berlin.  An optimal therapeutic strategy is developed for each patient at regular heart team conferences between cardiac surgeons and cardiologists.

The Charite Cardiac Surgery Clinic, with a variety of specializations within the compact team, is able to offer the full range of current adult heart surgery operations including aortic ascendens and aortic arch surgery. In addition to the optimization of established standard procedures through dedicated quality assurance, the team is focused on the application of the latest, most minimally invasive and tissue-conserving techniques. By default, these include minimally invasive bypass operations such as MID-CAB and OPCAB including endoscopic venous sampling as well as minimally invasive mitral valve operations via a small right lateral thoracotomy and operations on the aortic valve, which is usually performed via an upper mini-sternotomy.

The clinic is organized together with the three university cardiology in the TAVI (Transcatheter-Aortic Valve Replacement) Center of the Charite and in this cooperation also offers a catheter-based aortic valve replacement via transaxillary and transapical access routes. Director of the clinic
